THE DYGAJĄCA KAPELA
The Dygająca Kapela, the first musical ensemble affiliated with the "Upper Silesian Ethnographic Park Museum in Chorzów," is made up primarily of amateur musicians and lovers of singing. The ensamble's repertoire draws on traditional mining songs—and more—from the collection of Professor Adolf Dygacz. The name of the ensamble is no coincidence: the "Upper Silesian Ethnographic Park Museum in Chorzów" inherited the professor’s legacy, which is currently being digitized, and Dygająca Kapela carries on and promotes his work in the present day.
Since 2023, the ensamble has been led by Karo Przewłoka—a pedagogue, graduate of postgraduate studies in Polish traditional music at the Academy of Music in Katowice, and a vocalist and violinist in Kapela Dejcie Pozór and Krzikopa, with which she won, among others, third prize at the 22nd Polish Radio Folk Festival "Nowa Tradycja."
During Thursday meetings, musical talents are discovered and honed by, among others, a corporate employee, a journalist, an administrative worker, and an accountant. What unites them is a shared love for music.
The group draws its rehearsal material from the vast collection of songs gathered by Adolf Dygacz—one of the most important folklorists, an expert on Silesian culture, teacher, and publicist. Occasionally, the repertoire is expanded with traditional songs found in hymnals that predate even Dygacz’s compilations.
This museum ensamble not only performs during events organized by the open-air museum but also explores the historical and artistic context of old songs. Members of the Kapela learn how to sing traditional rural tunes, play folk instruments, and uncover the traditions and cultural heritage of the region.
