The building of the "Kaufhaus" department store

The building of the "Kaufhaus" department store is a monumental building, erected in 1904.

This building deserves special attention due to its richly decorated façade, which combines elements of Art Nouveau and early modernism. Its author is unknown. It is one of the first department stores in Europe. It was established a year before Harrods in London and three years before Kaufhaus des Westens in Berlin. The freight volume is part of the housing estate of the same name, built for employees of the "Pokój" steelwork located opposite. The estate was built in stages, between 1854 and 1924.
